"Let’s Go Guang! Chinese for Children" by aha!Chinese is a fun-based learning program designed to introduce kids naturally to the language and culture of China. Kids learn effortlessly through a well-researched approach that’s both engaging and enriching at the same time. The aha!Chinese team of linguists, educators, animators, an Emmy-nominated composer, an award-winning designer, parents, kids, and others, developed the Chinese learning kit specifically to appeal and teach children Mandarin Chinese as a second language. The learning kit is based on the concept that language acquisition is most effective when new material is presented in multiple ways. Our program is different from other Chinese language programs in that each learning kit comes as a complete set of mutually reinforcing materials, which stimulate visual, aural, and even physical learning.
The first component of the learning kit is a DVD containing the animated story of "Let’s Go Guang!," which features a Chinese-American sister and brother team, Ling and Kai, and Guang, the Chinese Dragon, who is their unwitting guide to their educational adventures. Mini-lessons, which use repetition and sing-a-long songs to focus on key phrases spoken in the stories, are interspersed throughout the main story. In addition to language, the story is rich in insights about Chinese culture, and includes a separate live-action cultural "featurette" about making Chinese dumplings. The second and third components are a storybook and audio CD, whose tale closely mirrors that of the animated video. The book serves to reinforce lessons learned in the DVD. While some children learn best visually, others enjoy reading books, or being read to, over and over again. The CD with narration makes it easy for parents to ensure their child always has access to proper pronunciations and also includes all of the lesson songs. The fourth component is a duplicate set of flashcards, which include the vocabulary words, phrases, and sentences used in the episode. Simplified Chinese characters, Romanized Chinese (pinyin), and English are printed on each card. These cards can be used as typical flashcards or to play games such as a matching memory game or Go Guang! (Go Fish) to reinforce the material in a fun way that provides hands-on learning. The fifth and final component is a Parent/Educator guide that describes how to best use the learning kit, provides tips on reading the romanized Chinese (which is used in the book), lists all of the vocabulary, and includes song lyrics from the DVD.
