The Spoils of Civilization™ is a motivational tool used to increase interest in schoolwork. The game uses a storyline of characters called MERBS™, which is an acronym for Mathematically Educated Randomized Buyers. They are interested in building a thriving civilization. The game is played by having students earn money for tasks such as homework, class work, tests, and quizzes. The students invest money in a stock market that is used to build an economy. Students must decide which territories to invest in and what is considered a fair market price. Throughout the game there are periods of recession and inflation.The game is designed for play over the course of an entire year or semester. By playing the game, students better understand the law of supply and demand, financial investing, how a recession and inflation occurs, mental math, stock trading, settlement trends, and pattern prediction. There is plenty of peer interaction. Instructions for parents who want to play the game as a traditional board game at home and an extensive guide for teachers are included. There are also supplemental activity books. Each game also includes 3 different instruction manuals for alternate game play: beginner’s manual, advanced manual, and teacher’s manual with a training CD. For classroom grades 6 to 9 and/or home use ages 10 and up.
