Exploring a fun new way for children to learn to read, Fox Home Entertainment and MGM Home Entertainment present the first wave of Follow Along DVD each utilizing an optional track of eye catching, bright and colorful Kids Captioning – similar to karaoke - enhancing readability versus traditional captioning in order to promote reading and vocabulary skills, in conjunction with popular family-friendly entertainment. Building a child’s learning skills through a selection of fantastically fun, feature-length films including Anastasia, Ferngully: The Last Rainforest, Garfield The Movie, Good Boy!, Ice Age, Miss Spider’s Sunny Patch Kids, Robots, The Sandlot, Stellaluna and Thumbelina, this unique approach to education fosters a thirst for knowledge by capitalizing on a child’s enthusiasm for entertainment.

More than 20 years of research conducted by the National Captioning Institute (NCI) and others has shown that children and adults can improve their literacy skills by viewing television programming with captions. According to academic expert Helen Hoffner, Ed.D, “Captioned programming combines print, pictures, and sound to help children become fluent readers. Overwhelming evidence indicates that repeated viewing of captioned programs leads to reading fluency. Parents and teachers should seize every opportunity to use captioned programming to motivate and educate young readers.”

According to the NCI, captioned television programs and entertainment create a rich learning environment by allowing students to hear the words, see the words as captions and experience the meaning of the words by watching the images on the TV screen. This approach to reading comprehension has been found to be beneficial by reading and special education teachers as a way to motivate slow or reluctant readers, students with learning disabilities and individuals learning English as an additional language. Much of the research was funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Education.

With a multi-sensory presentation and captivating entertainment qualities, captioned programming, such as the Follow Along DVDs, has the potential to enable children to read with confidence. Presented in colorful and collectible carrying cases, these films offer an innovative and exciting new way for kids to enjoy family favorites while sharpening their reading skills. Each film is available in both English and Spanish.
